Thelma Brown's "relationship" with breast cancer began many years prior to herself being a 5 year breast cancer survivor, her mother and four sisters were also diagnosed with breast cancer. Her oldest sister lost her battle with breast cancer about six months before Thelma was diagnosed herself. While her sister was "preaching" to a friend about Susan G. Komen and breast cancer, she said to Thelma, "A lot of women get breast cancer. Why do you care so much about Susan G. Komen?" Thelma's response was simply, "I care because breast cancer does not care. It does not care about me, you, our mothers, our sister, our friends, or our families. So until there is a world without breast cancer, I will do the little bit I can to make an impact against this horrible disease."
