"Once you have had breast cancer, you know your life will never be the same," says Kathy Stein. As a nine-year survivor of DCIS, a non-invasive form of breast cancer, Stein speaks from experience. For the last three years, - as North Central Alabama's Race for the Cure Chair, Stein has made sure that others benefit from her journey of survivorship. "I get emails and phone calls from people I don't even know," Stein says, "who just found out they have breast cancer and want someone to talk to and I am willing to help."

In 2009, Stein will step down from Race Chair to spend more time with her family. However, she is still on the Race Board and remains involved in local breast-cancer awareness education. She hands off her race-chair duties to Trish Portuese, a long-time volunteer with the Race for the Cure. Portuese brings a race management background to the position and says she relishes the "never a dull moment" atmosphere. But most of all, she loves working with "very energetic individuals who come together for one common goal - helping others by ending breast cancer forever."
